CREATION AND EVOLUTION: A Q&A with Yanan Melo

Question #1:
Try to define in your own words the meaning of ‘creation’ and ‘evolution’.

Answer:
‘Creation’ is the act of creating something. And ‘evolution’ is the act of ‘evolving’ or changing from one kind of creature to another kind in an extremely long period of time.

Question #2:
What is Evolution?

Answer:
The process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.

The idea of organic evolution was proposed by some ancient Greek thinkers but was long rejected in Europe as contrary to the literal interpretation of the Bible. Lamarck proposed a theory that organisms became transformed by their efforts to respond to the demands of their environment, but he was unable to explain a mechanism for this. Lyell demonstrated that geological deposits were the cumulative product of slow processes over vast ages. This helped Darwin toward a theory of gradual evolution over a long period by the natural selection of those varieties of an organism slightly better adapted to the environment and hence more likely to produce descendants. Combined with the later discoveries of the cellular and molecular basis of genetics, Darwin’s theory of evolution has, with some modification, become the dominant unifying concept of modern biology.

Question #2.5
What is Natural Selection?

Answer:
The process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. The theory of its action was first fully expounded by Charles Darwin and is now believed to be the main process that brings about evolution.

Question #3:
Is it possible to combine creation and evolution in some way, or are they mutually exclusive?

Answer:
They could be combined together. It is called “theistic evolution”. In theistic evolution, God created through evolution. “Theistic evolution” is a wrong belief because it is clear in Genesis 1-2 that God “created” the entire universe out of nothing. He did not cause the world to “evolve”.

Question #4:
Could Genesis 1 be compatible with an earth that is millions of years old?

Answer:
No. The first chapter of Genesis clearly states that God created the universe in six days and rested on the seventh day.

Question #5:
Is it important to know how long the days of creation lasted?

Answer:
No. It is not important to know how long those “days” lasted. Because if we try to discover how long they were, we might land on a pool of un-Biblical beliefs. Like “theistic evolution” or maybe “evolution” itself.

We must always stick to what God says in the Bible: God created the heavens and the earth in six days and on the seventh he rested.

The Bible was written not just for theologians, pastors, and adults, but for the young children who want to play and have fun all day. Everyone.

Question #6:
What is the meaning of ‘creation through the Word’?

Answer:
God created everything through the Word who is Jesus Christ (John 1:1-4). ‘And God said…’ is a constant phrase in Genesis 1. He created everything by just speaking.

That also means that His word is powerful. It could create anything out of nothing! Everything that was born (plants, animals, and man) and is still yet to be born was through the Word. His word is powerful. And His word is the Bible.

Question #7:
What is an Atheist?

Answer:
An Atheist is a person who does not believe in God or a god.

Question #8:
What is “Observable Evidence”?

Answer:
“Observable Evidence” is proof or evidence for a certain subject that could be studied or observed scientifically.

Question #9:
Are the evolutionists able to give even just one example of an “observable evidence” of Darwinian Evolution where there is a change of kinds? What are the examples? Are they reasonable examples? Why or why not?

Answer:
Some of the examples they give are: Bacteria to bacteria with new metabolic capabilities but still bacteria. Birds with new beak sizes but still birds.

These examples were wrong. Because the examples only show changes in their traits or characteristics, not a change of kind. Darwinian Evolution is about a change of kind like a chicken to a cow, or a cow to a worm. Not a small beak into a larger beak or large wings into smaller wings (it is called adaptation, development or micro-evolution, not macro-evolution).

Question #10:
What is “Intelligent Design”?

Answer:
A design or plan of a certain object that couldn’t be copied, made, or created by a normal human being.

Question #11:
Do evolutionists believe in “Intelligent Design”? Why or why not?

Answer:
No. Because they believe that evolution is not intelligent or began/planned by an intelligent God or creature.

Question #12:
Do you believe that a rose is intelligently designed? Why or why not?

Answer:
Yes I do. Because if a rose is not intelligently designed, then there would be no rose at all. If it just “evolved” from a certain cell without any intelligent design from God, then how will it turn sunlight into food? How will its roots gather water for it to drink? How will it change carbon dioxide into oxygen? It won’t be a rose if it was not intelligently designed. In fact, it would be nothing at all!

Question #13:
Define “vestigial”.

Answer:
An object that remained after nearly all of something has disappeared.

Question #14:
What do evolutionists believe about the human tailbone?

Answer:
It was the remains or “vestigial” of the primate tail that we had when we were still monkeys.

Question #15:
Is the human tailbone really a tailbone? What is the other name for it?

Answer:
No it is not really a tailbone. It is a bone which is an extremely important source of attachment for tendons, ligaments, and muscles.

The other name for it is: coccyx.

Question #16:
What do evolutionists believe about the human appendix?

Answer:
It is a nerve that is really not that important.

Question #17:
Is their belief about the human tailbone and appendix correct? Why or why not?

Answer:
No. They believe that both the tailbone and appendix are vestigial. They remained from something that once existed, but disappeared when we evolved into humans.

Such a belief is wrong. The tailbone or coccyx is an important bone, as I explained in my answer on Question #10. And the appendix is a part of the human immune system. It is very important for the fetus and young adults.

Question #18:
Can you really call the adherence to the evolution theory a belief?

Answer:
Yes. However, people choose to believe in evolution to make it an excuse. Because they don’t want to repent of their sins and evil desires. And evolution is their excuse.

Question #19:
Does the creation story in Genesis 1 give you enough foothold to believe in the Creator?

Answer:
Yes. No one can prove the creation story in Genesis 1 because there was no one except God. How He created is totally and absolutely beyond our comprehension. Sometimes, we question if Genesis 1 really happened.

However, the author of Genesis 1 never intended to create a scientific detail of creation, but to prove that God is the Divine Creator. That He created the entire universe—from the stars to the planets to the creatures to the molecules to the atoms—in six days.

And what we should keep in mind is: Genesis 1 was not written in the language of the twenty-first century, but in the language of an Israelite thousands of years ago.

Question #20:
What does it mean that the Lord created a complex creation? Do you think it is possible that there are extra-terrestrial beings on other planets?

Answer:
God created a complex creation. It means that God’s creation could not be copied or duplicated by anyone or anything. His creation is so complex that no one could create anything as such. God’s majestic and beautiful creation could not be copied or made. Even the tiny atoms.

Aliens would be great. I love aliens. Many of us do love aliens. Superman is an alien. But, it is totally impossible for life to exist in other planets.

God created earth and put life in it. But, that world fell to a path that led to death. And Jesus Christ, God’s only son, was sent to earth to die for our sins. On the third day he rose from the dead. And now, we have the Bible.

If there were aliens, did they sin? If they did, who was their Savior? Did they have the same Bible we have or do they have a different one? Did they have an alien named Paul who wrote Romans and an alien named Noah who built an ark for the Great Flood? Did they even have a Great Flood? If life exists in other planets, it would absolutely be a HUGE mess.

So, I have come to a conclusion that it is impossible for life to exist in other planets.

Question #21:
Do you think man, in the future, will ever be able to create ‘something’ out of ‘nothing’? In other words: bring dead material to life?

Answer:
No. I don’t think, in the future, we could do what God did: ‘bringing dead material to life’. Because we are not God. Period.

We are sinful humans. He is powerful. We are weak. He is the source of life. We are the source of death (thanks to sin). He is immortal. We are mortal.

We are a disgrace.

We are sinners.

How could we even save our own soul from getting damned eternally in the lake of God’s just and deadly wrath? We could not because we are sinners and we owe God an amount we could not pay. Why? Because we are sinners, filthy sinners. The animal sacrificed in the Old Testament was a clean animal. We are un-clean.

So, God sent his Son to earth two thousand years ago as Jesus of Nazareth. He payed the debt we could never pay. How? He suffered hell on the cross and on the third hour, he died. He died for us to pay the penalty of our sins. But, on the third day he defeated death. “He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;” (Apostle’s Creed)

Now, all we have to do is repent, turn away from our sins and return to God. And believe that Jesus has died for us on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. To pay the debt we could never pay.

Question #22:
What do you believe?

Answer:
I believe in God. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe in Creation. I believe that God exists. I believe that he CREATED the entire universe. I believe that God is Just and Holy. I believe in Jesus Christ who died on the cross to pay for my sins with his blood. I believe in the Holy Spirit who gave me faith and continues to sanctify and help me daily in my battle against sin and the temptations of the Devil.

I believe in God, the One who created everything.

Yours truly,
Yanan Melo
